Ookay. That was weird: The Toronto meet reviewed.

So I went to the Toronto meet on the dA World Tour stop. I didn't stay forever, because my cousin had to be home early and I was basically her ride. Anywayyyy, uhh... I stayed for about two hours? Enough for a crapload of group photos and I'm sure even more moments wherein I looked incredibly lame. Here are some of my observations of the time I spent at the event:

We got there on time. Yayyy. We stood around for a while, looking for someone with name tags. Finally, we found and got some. Then we stood around talking... to each other. My cousin isn't on dA, I brought her in case I was accosted or... I don't know, mostly moral support. Yeah, so I found the event awfully cliquey and not... not that friendly? I mean, everyone was nice enough, but nobody was like... making an effort to talk to people who were clearly by themselves. And the few people I tried talking to just kind of ran away like I was RUINING THEIR DAY BY SAYING HELLO OMG. Seriously, I said hi to people walking by on more than five separate occasions and every single time I got a weak "hi" back and they would just walk away with this look on their face like I just toppled their Jenga tower.

After a while at the top of the hill where everyone was meeting we kind of started moving down to the more open park-y area. Listened to $spyed talk for a while, and then some other idiots making noise and being stupid while he was trying to say stuff. Aaaaand then... uhm. There was an annoying kid trying to spray everyone with a sprinkler, which I wouldn't have minded since it was so hot... but the shrieks of girls (and some boys) was enough to make me wish he'd stop. From there we split into groups regarding our style of art. Digital art... traditional... I don't know, I couldn't hear anything after he said "photography group, follow this guy" and then I just decided that applied to me well enough and followed him! In the group we stood around... introduced ourselves, and then sat down to talk about the site with $Moonbeam13. It was nice, but that portion was for the site. People who spend loads of time here and browse and actually take the whole thing seriously.

I am not one of those people.

Anyway, that's about the point where I left.
I got in the car at about 4:00pm to drive home.
I had arrived at 2:06pm.
Two hours was not enough to make it worthwhile for me.
But then again, I didn't stick it out until the very end, so perhaps it got much better as the day went on.

So, my overall opinion:
-Not really the place for networking. Nobody introduced themselves to me. Nobody let me introduce myself to them. It's definitely a place to go WITH or TO MEET WITH someone you already know/talk to from the site. The people there already have their groups and it's not likely they'll let you into them.
-If you don't have much time to spend there, don't expect it to be fabulous. I'm not at all clear on what happened once I left, but it was fairly unexciting for the time I was actually there.
- If you're a fan of the site and spend a lot of time here, definitely go to one of these. There's so much for you to learn about and people you can suggest things to.
- Easily amused? Loud? DEFINITELY GO TO A MEET WOOOO OMG LOLOLOL WOO.

Anyway. Yeah. The end. That's my assessment.
I'll definitely go to another one of these in the future, but not before I "haz buddeh" to meet up with.

... I also have just found pictures of me from the event.
I look awful.
... And will most likely be joining a gym in the near future.
Ew.

  • Mood: Neglect
  • Listening to: Fan noises... shshhhhhhwooommm.
  • Watching: My dignity slip away.

Poor Kat, if only I was anywhere near Toronto I would've hung out with you. I'm just kinda bummed I already made plans for the NY devmeet or I would've gone, and come late so I could be there for the last group photo and then hung out at a whatever kind of place they hang out at around 11 pm.

I didn't dislike the event. I mean, it was difficult to be miserable on such a lovely day. It was just a weird atmosphere for the time I spent milling around. And most of that time we were in our groups, so I barely had a chance to meet someone from another group. Y'know? I mean, you seem to be a digital artist. Odds are, we wouldn't have met. At all. Unless you were in the photography group at one point. I couldn't hear anyone talking past the few people next to me... so if you were there and introduced yourself, I'm sorry! ^-^ Blame the background noise!

I think it would have been cooler if we were more friendly right off the bat, instead of... so formal? The chance to network is half the fun, and when nobody takes charge and is like "BE FRIENDS NOW." then no one will do it. I know everyone is different, and few people there were probably very outgoing if at all, so it would've been nice if someone had shown some initiative.

... But all in all, I had a nice time. I just didn't meet anybody, and left early. Perhaps I should have stayed longer, but eh. I'm glad I got a feel for how these shindigs go down. Maybe next time I'll be more prepared, and bring my outgoing face. :) So yeah. Glad you had a good time, though! Yay for meeting people.

I actually went with the traditional group. I do some digital but usually starts out as traditional so i went there. That particular group didn't disperse until somewhere near 530 when people got hungry. I mostly just sat with my book open and let people come to me once we had done our little intros. :XD: Then we went and yapped with :iconmombeam: some before heading back up that hill of torture to the cafe for dinner with those who were left. Around 1030 the people left from that headed to a bar downtown but we couldnt find parking so we dropped a few people off and headed home since we lived an hour out. :XD:

Ah, yes, see! So I wouldn't have met you at all. How sad. I think perhaps people would be better off if there were some kind of media mixing going on. But yes, it was fun the way it was. Perhaps I should have stayed longer. There are always other meets, though! :)

THAT HILL. Ugh. I was climbing it (avoiding the suspiciously greasy looking man sunbathing) when I left, and it was really horrible. I sympathize with you all. I was wondering how people would be able to climb it in a bigger group, because I was stumbling around trying not to roll back the way I came. Odds are I would have smacked somebody accidentally if anyone had been around.
